Home Network Trials & Tribulations

My wife and I just moved into a new (old) house. 2 floors, 2 bedrooms, and a finished guest room in the attic. Beautiful house!

I told myself that when we moved into our forever home I would wire it up for 10Gb internet, and here we are. I’ve got big plans and small skills so it’s going to be a hot mess but I promised myself I’d get it done. So I’ve been collecting supplies and watching YouTube videos to prepare myself, and I think I’m getting close.

I want to try to make a write up for the process I go through, and try to document how many times I fuck up everything. Or maybe everything will go great, who knows? All I know is I want to get it done ASAP because this house is a WiFi black hole. My wife works from home a few days a week, so a stable connection is very important. The only place she’s able to work at the moment is in the living room next to the (soon to be replaced) wireless router.

Having a wired connection is obviously the ideal situation so that she’s able to work in our office on the second floor without worrying about a dropped connection, or being interrupted by our daughter, our dog, or me. We’ll be sharing an office that has both of our desktops, as well as the dock for her work laptop. We both play PC games, so a wired connection would be best for the dock and both desktops.

And then there’s the game consoles in the living room, our security cameras, and my servers I’m setting up in the basement. So I’m gonna be busy. I’ll try to post as much progress as I can. Please look forward to it.
